This thesis examines the feasibility and viability of integrating photovoltaic systems into historical buildings across European cultural heritage cities. It entails a comprehensive evaluation of the technological and economic aspects of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), coupled with the utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for solar potential mapping. The study aims to assess the practicality of adopting BIPV systems within the context of preserving cultural heritage while promoting sustainable energy solutions. Through a thorough analysis of technological advancements, cost-benefit analyses, and GIS-based solar potential mapping, this research seeks to provide valuable insights into the challenges, opportunities, and implications associated with the integration of renewable energy technologies into historical urban environments. Furthermore, through techno-economic analysis, the thesis examines the performance and cost-effectiveness of BIPV systems in the context of European cultural heritage cities. The findings of this study are expected to inform policymakers, urban planners, architects, and heritage conservationists on the potential benefits and challenges associated with the adoption of BIPV technologies in European cultural heritage cities, ultimately guiding decision-making processes towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
